Frozen at the Beach

I'm not sure how smart it was to attempt a road trip with Luke when he was 4 weeks old, but we decided a trip to Wrightsville Beach was worth the risk. So we planned to head to the beach the first weekend in January...and then realized a huge winter storm was going to hit Raleigh at the same time. So there was lots of back and forth on whether it was safe to go, when we should go, should we go?

I was bummed to miss the first snow of the year, but we decided to go and I'm glad we did because the snow ended up missing Raleigh. Raleigh just got a trace of snow while the storm actually hit Hickory- they got eight whole inches!

And Wrightsville Beach? They got an arctic blast. Seriously, I have never felt it so cold at the beach before. The highs were in the low 20's each day so we needed to come up with some indoor entertainment...so everyone (minus Luke and me) headed to the aquarium.

I had packed the girls snow bibs (praying that somehow the snow would reach us at the beach), and it's a good thing because they came in handy! They allowed the girls to actually play outside, and they thought it was super fun to get dressed in their snow gear.

Doesn't it look like Addie is at the ski lodge sipping hot chocolate? Nope, she's just drinking milk out of a disposable cup at the beach. They had fun pretending they were drinking coffee. :)

After bundling up, we headed toward the beach...

where we saw dolphins swimming...

attempted "sand angels"...

and realized we couldn't feel our ears/noses/fingers. It was CRAZY how biting the cold was especially with the wind whipping us on the beach. We literally lasted five minutes before giving up and retreating back to the cozy warmth of the beach house.

There were more important things to do inside anyway...like have a photo session with this cute baby. Luke did not get to see the ocean on his first trip to the beach because it was just too cold, but he did get to see the inside of Tower 7!

Love this one of him and Addie!

Time indoors was spent making giant snowflakes (since we didn't actually get any)...

dressing up...

getting the sillies out...

baking...

catching up on sleep...

and just hanging out.

Luke turned one month old while we were there so I felt the need to take an "official" one month photo of him.

The girls had to get in on the action of course...

Each day the girls bundled up to go outside and play...

and were excited when Brian discovered they could play at the empty Surf Club next door.

Can you believe these crazies got in the water?? They were taunting me the whole time.

So Raleigh didn't get a lot of snow, but they did get their share of ice. So as you can guess, schools were closed because of it. Collins ended up being out of school that next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so we stayed at the beach a couple of extra days.
After hearing from our neighbors that it was safe to drive back into Blenheim, we headed back. Luke slept the whole way down to the beach, would he do the same on the way back? Not really...but Donna came along to help us out. Overall, a successful first road trip for this baby and a fun frozen beach adventure for the rest of us!
