When you shut down school all of a sudden, it's not easy to come up with a quick and effective at-home learning plan. Wake County Schools gave themselves a little extra time to figure things out by moving up and extending our Spring Break. So that meant we were at home for two weeks with absolutely nothing to do. No friends to see and nowhere to go. I knew this would not work, so I made a plan.
Each day would be a different theme that we would learn about in a fun way. The first day was space. We painted constellations and the starry skies...
did puzzles, built rocket ships and robots, and ate a space-themed lunch.
We worked our way through animals where they built some pretty cool wooden animals and enoyed some animal toast.
Addie was quite proud of herself when she wrote her own book about animals.
We finished up animal day with some home-made bird feeders (which the squirrels loved).
but my personal favorite was anatomy day when we learned more about the human body. I found this disgusting experiment you could do on digestion to teach the kids how the body processes food. You took bananas and some other food and mashed it up until it smelled bad, and then you literally squeezed it through a pair of pantyhose. The kids were freaking out! It was really funny to watch their reactions to this very graphic anatomy lesson.
I really got into these two weeks of themed learning (thanks to Pinterest and a fear of boredom), but faded fast. It took a lot of energy to plan these lessons, and I quickly got lazy. :) But it was fun while it lasted!
